Living By the Sea - Health Benefits - Coastal Homes North Wales

Thinking about how you live when you’re on holiday, it’s easy to see how living by the sea can do you good. There is all the fresh sea air, long beach walks, swimming, and nutritious seafood. Even living on the colder coast of the UK without a white sand beach or constant sun can be beneficial for your health.

Is seaside living good for your health?

Reachers at the European Centre for Environment and Human Health in the University of Exeter studied data from the UK census of over 48 million people to analyse how someone’s geographical location could potentially affect their health.

The census had information on the populations self-assessed health, they were asked if it was good, fairly good, or not good. This was then correlated to where they lived, and results show that the closer to the sea, the better their health was.

A place to relax…

The researcher cannot be certain why living on the coast is beneficial to your health, but guess that it is because you have access to an area which encourages activities and stress reduction.

Another study carried out by this group shows that people felt calmer when they visited the coast. They felt more relaxed and de-stressed than they did after making a similar visit to a park in the city or the countryside. Further research needs to be conducted to figure out just why the sea has this effect on people.

Does sea air help you sleep?

Dr Natasha Bijlani, a psychiatrist from London claims that sea air can aid sleep as it is generally cleaner and fresher than other areas, and contains higher levels of oxygen. She also adds that the sounds of the waves can soothe the brain. This can apparently clear the mind, lower stress levels and even strengthen your immune system!

Healthy mind, healthy body…

Living by the sea gives you more of a chance to exercise for free – it’s like having a huge swimming pool on your doorstep. Swimming in the sea offers not just a mental break but helps your physical health by managing your weight, lowering your risk of heart disease, and decreasing blood pressure.

If you’re not into swimming, there are other forms of exercise which the coast makes available to you. You can have a go at surfing, paddle boarding, sailing, walking, and wildlife watching. The seaside environment can be very motivating.
